To explain the wide variations and individual differences in "cracking the language code," Baron uses three composite children who represent three different types of language learners. The book is divided into seven major chapters, each representing a stage in language development from the idea of language to first words, a grammar, and eventually sophisticated conversation. About the Author Naomi S. Baron is Professor of Linguistics and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at The American University in Washington, D.C.
