I read this book in one day. I was so disappointed. The basic thesis is: don't narrate or describe in long paragraphs because movies have ruined the reader's attention span so make it as simple as possible. If a Dostoevsky or Thomas Mann had come across their desk they would have rejected them on the length of their paragraphs alone. Also, they need to do some self-editing: they use "already" on one page, all quotes have "all ready" and finally they get it right on their own when they too use "all ready." The same word spelled two ways in the same book. Pathetic.I woudl say get "Becoming a Novelist" and "Teh Modern Language writer's Workshop" - the latter is especially smart and intelligent and will take more than a day to read because it gets you thinking, unlike this simplistic pulp nonfiction.

If it was possible to give this book zero stars, I would do it. Or, the first-ever negative-star book. How do they explain, for example, how many best-sellers, including Harry Potter, Steven King, among others that have adverbs.

This book was required reading for the Form and Technique of Fiction class that I took. I suggest writers use this book in conjunction with other books and guidelines about good fiction writing. Personally, I feel that the authors need to have some new suggestions to keep selling an updated edition of this book. For that reason, they go to extremes to criticize some of the greatest writers in the world--which is pointless because we all know acceptable writing styles have changed over the years. Nowadays, the public expects a more streamlined style of writing. But writers still have to use the English language and the power of all parts of English grammar, including adverbs, to their advantage. Everyone hops on the anti-adverb wagon, but if you, as the writer, know that a certain adverb is necessary, use it. The book contains some good information about repetition that is worth taking to heart, but you can do an internet search on repetition in fiction writing and glean the same information that is being offered. Should you buy this book? As part of your total experience in learning how to express your fiction, I would say,"Yes." But I would never let its instructions be the final word. For my part, its guidelines are too rigid to be followed exclusively.

This is the single most useful book on writing for me. I don't usually have a problem getting the words to flow (getting my hinder in the Throne of Writing (tm) is another story) but I struggle with revising more than anything else. I may not know the answer of 'what to cut' but this book tells me why to cut or rephrase. I can't praise it enough. The book is filled with examples and exercises, many of which are taken from well-known published writers. Seeing how to do things right is invaluable to me. Here's one example just off the top of my head: voice. I can't think of any other writing book I've read so far that gave even a hint about how to develop a writer's voice. Brown and King's suggestions there was deceptively simple but revelatory. The discussion ranges from exclamation points to profanity (both are suggested to be used sparingly...especially the exclamation points) and the author not only provide advice, they back it up with those useful examples I mentioned above. This book belongs on every writer's bookshelf...actually, not on the bookshelf, it belongs on their writing desk. For new writers, start with this book. You won't be sorry.

I've been using Self-Editing for Fiction Writers for the past few years and find it invaluable. I have even recommended it to two writers' groups in Edmonton, Alberta, plus numerous authors.Although there are some tips/suggestions that I may not agree with (such as using 'said' virtually exclusively), I use each chapter as a checklist when editing my work. I find the chapters on Point of View (POV), dialogue, interior monologue and beats most useful and easy to understand.Along with explanations and examples, there are short exercises you can do to help improve your writing and editing. I would suggest writers remember some of these suggestions are based on preference while others follow basic writing rules. If you are a fiction writer--whether short stories or novel--I highly recommend this book by Renni Browne and Dave King. You won't be disappointed!~ Cheryl Kaye TardifAuthor of Divine Intervention

After editing a pretty solid first draft of a mystery novel, setting it aside for several weeks, and reading a handful of craft books while considering what I'd already written, I was pretty sure that this highly recommended book wouldn't offer much incremental improvement. I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I finished this book, picked up my manuscript, and began cringing and marking up all manner of amateur mistakes I was sure I'd either not made or fixed in early revisions. The book offers solid examples of good writing and before/after examples of improved writing. The authors approach the sensitive topic of editing with respect for writers and the people who will be subjected to that writing. Checklists at the ends of all chapters are good quick-reference guides - I intend to copy them onto a single chart to post over my desk.
